Estradiol spray

Also called: Evamist.

Definition: Estradiol spray (Evamist) delivers a metered dose of estradiol through the skin once daily on the inner forearm. Like other transdermal options, it bypasses first-pass hepatic metabolism. It is one of the lowest-profile transdermal options.

Detailed definition

Evamist is a topical estradiol metered-dose spray that delivers 1.53 mg of estradiol per spray to the inner forearm. The starting dose is one spray daily; up to three sprays daily can be used for inadequate symptom control. After application, the area must dry for 2 minutes before being covered or in contact with another person; small children and pets should avoid contact with treated skin. Pharmacokinetically it produces serum estradiol levels comparable to other transdermal options.

Why it matters in menopause

Spray formulations are an option for women who want transdermal delivery but find patches uncomfortable and gels messy. Evamist has the smallest application footprint of the transdermal options.
