Femring

Definition: Femring is an estradiol vaginal ring that delivers systemic doses (0.05 or 0.1 mg of estradiol per day) for 90 days. Unlike the lower-dose Estring, Femring is FDA-approved for systemic use to treat vasomotor symptoms and requires progesterone in women with a uterus.

Detailed definition

Femring is a silicone vaginal ring that releases estradiol acetate at 0.05 or 0.1 mg per day over 90 days. Unlike the local-effect Estring (7.5 mcg/day), Femring delivers systemic doses sufficient to treat vasomotor symptoms, GSM, and prevent osteoporosis. Femring is changed every 3 months. For women with an intact uterus, a progestogen is required for endometrial protection.

Why it matters in menopause

Femring is a good option for women who want systemic HRT but dislike patches, gels, and daily pills. The 90-day dosing interval is convenient.
