Mammogram / breast cancer screening

Definition: Mammography is the primary breast cancer screening modality. USPSTF recommends biennial screening for women aged 40–74 (updated 2024 from prior 50–74). HRT users should continue routine mammographic screening; HRT does not change screening intervals.

Detailed definition

Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to image breast tissue for cancer screening. USPSTF updated its recommendations in 2024 to recommend biennial screening for women aged 40–74 (previously the threshold was 50). Women at higher risk (BRCA carriers, prior radiation, family history with risk model thresholds) may need earlier and more intensive screening including MRI. HRT use does not change screening intervals but is associated with modest increases in breast density on mammogram, which can complicate interpretation and slightly reduce sensitivity. Women on HRT should continue routine mammographic screening per general population guidelines.

Why it matters in menopause

Current mammography is a baseline expectation before starting HRT in women in the appropriate age range. ClearedRx confirms screening status at intake.
