NAMS (The Menopause Society)

Also called: The Menopause Society, North American Menopause Society.

Definition: NAMS — formerly the North American Menopause Society, now branded as The Menopause Society — is the leading professional society for menopause clinicians in North America. Its position statements (notably the 2022 Hormone Therapy Position Statement) are the most-cited evidence-based guidance on HRT in the United States.

Detailed definition

The Menopause Society (NAMS) is a multidisciplinary nonprofit organization founded in 1989. It includes physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, sociologists, basic scientists, and other professionals focused on menopause. NAMS produces position statements that synthesize current evidence on HRT, GSM, osteoporosis, sleep, mood, sexual function, and related topics. The 2022 NAMS Hormone Therapy Position Statement is widely regarded as the authoritative US evidence-based guidance and concludes that HRT is the most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms and GSM and that the benefit-risk profile is favorable for healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause without contraindications. NAMS also offers Certified Menopause Practitioner (NCMP) credentialing for clinicians.

Why it matters in menopause

When discussing the evidence basis for an HRT decision, NAMS guidance is the natural reference point in the US. Modern menopause practices — including ClearedRx — operate within NAMS-aligned standards.
