Vaginal estrogen tablet

Also called: Vagifem, Yuvafem.

Definition: Vaginal estrogen tablets (Vagifem, Yuvafem) are small estradiol-containing tablets inserted into the vagina with an applicator. Standard dosing is one tablet daily for 2 weeks then twice weekly for maintenance. Tablets produce very low systemic absorption — among the lowest of vaginal estrogen options.

Detailed definition

Vagifem and its generic Yuvafem deliver 10 mcg of estradiol per tablet via a thin disposable applicator. Induction is one tablet daily for 14 days; maintenance is one tablet twice weekly. Pharmacokinetic studies show minimal serum estradiol elevation at this dose. The tablets dissolve in the vaginal vault and release estradiol locally. Tablets are clean and convenient, with less leakage than creams.

Why it matters in menopause

Tablets are among the most convenient vaginal estrogen options for ongoing maintenance and have one of the lowest systemic absorption profiles among vaginal estrogens.
