IMS (International Menopause Society)

Also called: International Menopause Society.

Definition: The International Menopause Society (IMS) is the global menopause specialist society, with member societies on every continent. It produces the IMS Recommendations on Menopausal Hormone Therapy and the journal Climacteric, and serves as the international counterpart to NAMS.

Detailed definition

The International Menopause Society (IMS) is the global federation of national and regional menopause societies, founded in 1978. Its 2016 Recommendations on Menopausal Hormone Therapy and Preventive Strategies for Midlife Health (with subsequent updates) are widely-cited international guidelines. The society publishes the journal Climacteric and runs the World Menopause Day campaign each October 18. IMS provides global perspective on menopause care and serves as the international counterpart to NAMS in the US and the British Menopause Society in the UK.

Why it matters in menopause

For international consistency, IMS recommendations align closely with NAMS for most clinical decisions. They are useful when comparing US guidance to international standards.
