Detailed definition
The Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) was developed in the 1990s and has been validated across dozens of languages and population cohorts. It assesses 11 symptoms — hot flashes/sweating, heart discomfort, sleep problems, depressive mood, irritability, anxiety, physical and mental exhaustion, sexual problems, bladder problems, vaginal dryness, and joint and muscle discomfort — each rated 0 (none) to 4 (very severe). Total scores range from 0 to 44 and are typically classified: 0–4 none/minimal, 5–8 mild, 9–15 moderate, 16+ severe. Subscales for somatic, psychological, and urogenital domains can be calculated separately to identify dominant symptom clusters. The MRS is one of the most-used menopause symptom instruments in research and clinical practice globally.
Why it matters in menopause
A validated symptom score helps women, clinicians, and telehealth services share a common language about severity. ClearedRx's Symptom Score tool uses the MRS to give patients a tier rating in 2 minutes and inform treatment recommendations.
